I set out to write The Lost Art of Compassion in order to provide methods that ordinary Westerners can use outside of the Buddhist context. This concept has also fuelled many wars and conflicts in history, and even in the present day. There are many different forms of religion and spirituality, and there are also many different types of people, including those who are inclined toward religious or spiritual approaches and those who are not.
Empathy derives from a Greek root word meaning, "in feeling" or "feeling into. Too often, we imagine that we can find happiness outside of ourselves-in wealth, success, fame, work, or relationships. Even as we understand that loving-kindness and compassion are so important, we will also find it is quite difficult to fully and genuinely incorporate them into our experience.

Therefore, since we are connected to all of these beings, it is possible for us to further our connection to them by bringing them benefit. In over a hundred years of our Western psychological tradition, our greatest thinkers and researchers have focused on understanding hysteria, obsessions, psychoses, compulsions, depression, anxiety, impulsive anger, personality disorders, and the like.
Yet, we do not generally realize that positive emotions also have such gradations. Though all life is considered sacred, human life is deemed the highest form of earthly existence.
